The engineering industry offers an interesting working sector for every young person. If you love strong engines or want to help to develop cars that are more environmentally friendly, you might want to consider a career within one of the biggest UK engineering sectors – The automotive engineering.
This is truly a career choice that is creative, helping designing, building and maintaining vehicles to a high standard.
Probably one of the most famous and inspiring automotive engineers is Henry Ford, founder of Ford Motor Company.
Henry Ford was born in 1863 and grew up on a little farm in Michigan where he enjoyed fixing machines. This give him the opportunity to experiment with engines and soon he constructed his first horseless carriage, which he sold in order to finance a better model. Henry Ford opened the Ford Motor Company in 1903 with the aim of building cars for everyone at an affordable price. That is was he did. He offered the Model T for $950 to the public, making not a lot of profit but 19 years later he started mass producing his vehicles at a production cost as low as $280 and sold nearly 16 million cars within the USA. Henry Ford had a vision of creating something that did not exist and that is what engineering is about – innovation and future.
Ford is not the only car company that has innovative visions. Hyundai recently launched the first ever hydrogen fuel-cell concept car called “Intrado”. This perfectly engineered and manufactured car runs on a lithium-ion battery and takes you 600 kilometres in one charge. But there is more, this car produces drinking water. The idea is to integrate this car especially in Africa where clean drinking water is luxury.
Jon Winrow, Hyundai Sales Director of the North West, said: “The car industry is all about innovation. The interesting thing is that the industry standards are always changing and that’s why it is an exciting career. At the moment the trend goes towards environmentally friendly cars and Hyundai engineers are trying to create the perfect car.”
The technology that Hyundai has created to produce the ”Intrado” cost around £30,000 at the moment. UK engineers are working hard on this project to bring down the cost of this car. YOU could be one of them – with a vision and a little bit of creativity you might have the right skills to become an engineer in this exciting and fast moving industry.
This industry offers great engineering job prospects as they are big major companies that always look for inspiring, creative and motivated people. The industry offers excellent salaries and great engineering career opportunities.
